Provincial Secretary for Formation & Studies

Cristino Pine, OFM, Provincial Secretary for Formation and Studies presented to the Provincial Definitory the updates on formation. The following is his report:

The Core Formation Team of the Aspirancy Formation Program has organized a welcome activity for the incoming candidates (First Year Seminarians and Pre-postulants) at the Our Lady of the Angels Seminary (OLAS) in the morning of May 22, 2013.  The activity started with a Eucharistic celebration presided over by Mark Adame Bakari, OFM.  The Secretary for Formation and Studies, Cristino Pine OFM, was the homilist.  He emphasized the importance of taking into account, as part of the formation process, the love and care for OLAS as our home. Addressing the parents and/or families, he also articulated the great challenge of collaboration in trying to form our candidates.  The Aspirancy Formation Team is composed of the Director of the Aspirancy Mark Adame Bakari OFM and the formators Cesar Malasa OFM, Emerson Bumagat OFM and Angelo Dizon OFM. As of the present, there are 73 seminarians at OLAS.

2. Postulancy

There are Fourteen Postulants (one from Myanmar Foundation) accepted by the Minister Provincial on June 1, 2013 at the Postulancy Formation House in SFDM, Quezon City.  The Postulancy Formation Team is composed of the Master of the Postulants Rolie Pimentero OFM, and the formators Cielito Almazan OFM and Edwin Peter Dionisio, OFM

3. Novitiate

There are eleven novices (including one from the Myanmar Foundation and two from the Sri Lanka Foundation) received by the Minister Provincial on May 31, 2013 at the Juan de Plasencia Novitiate House in Liliw, Laguna.  The Novitiate Formation Team is composed of the Master of the Novices Alejo Villanueva OFM and the formators Albert Marfil OFM and Andy Litigio OFM.

4. Post-Novitiate

The Post-Novitiate Formation Community held their opening assembly on June 9, 2013 at the Monasterio de Sta. Clara in Cubao, Quezon City.  The Secretary for Formation and Studies Cristino Pine OFM gave an input on Eco-Spirituality, challenging the Post-Novitiate Community to positively respond to the challenges related to the problems of Global Climate Change.  There are 19 Temporary Professed friars (including three from Myanmar and one from Sri Lanka).  The Post-Novitiate Formation Team is composed of the Master of friars in temporary profession Judee Mar Maquinad OFM, the Director of the Integrees Irineo Tactac III OFM and formator Nestor Catorce, OFM.  The newly perpetually professed friars Fernando Radin, Jr. OFM and Joseph Aramar Pallones OFM are also assigned as assistant formators.

5. Student Friars from Myanmar Foundation

Br. Jeung Min Heo OFM (Basil of Korea), the Formator of the student friars from Myanmar Foundation met with the Secretary for Formation and Studies Cristino Pine OFM on May 21 at OLAS.  He raised several concerns: the policy they have with regard to the use of cell phone: student friars from Myanmar are not allowed to use cell phones; the possible program for December-exposure; the regular submission of reflection, individual conferences and/or spiritual direction of their candidates.

6. Returnees

There are three returnees, expected to be integrated into the Pre-Postulancy Formation at OLAS in January 2014, who are already staying in the different communities: Mark Dean Sayat in St. Mary of the Angels Community in Sta. Teresita, Cagayan; Jerich Tepace in St. Anthony of Padua Community in Donsol, Sorsogon; Elimark Cruz in Casa de San Gregorio Magno in Virac Catanduanes.  Raymund Cabintoy, who is to be integrated into the Postulancy Formation in January 2014, is already staying at the Our Mother of Perpetual Help Community in Sta. Fe, Nueva Vizcaya.  The Secretary for Formation and Studies Cristino Pine OFM as well as the Master of the Postulants talked to Cabintoy before he was sent to Nueva Vizcaya.  Cabintoy was asked to submit his narrative report on the reason as to why he did not report to the Novitiate when he was about to do so.  His report must also contain a more detailed narrative of his experiences, learning and realization while he was outside our Formation Program.

7. Special Programmes

The RCW programmes to be taken by some of our candidates and/or friars in initial formation are already arranged.  Fred Antonio Jr., who is preparing for simple profession, is already staying at the Our Lady of the Abandoned Community.  There was confusion when it was supposed that he must stay there until December 2013.  The counting of the months of his extension starts in June, and therefore, he is expected to profess in the month of November this year.  Temporary professed friar Lloyd Elauria is already staying at the Sta. Clara Mission Community in Navotas.  Temporary professed friar Dominador Valdez stays with the Integration Community in Baguio until he undertakes the RCW 1 on July 19-21, after which he must report to St. Anthony of Padua Community in Sta. Ana, Cagayan and stays there until the end of December 2013.

8. Committee on Promotions

The Committee on Promotions composed of the Chairperson Cristino Pine OFM (Secretary for Formation and Studies) and members Cielito Almazan (OGF Moderator) and Wilfredo Benito (Ministerial Formation Director) met on June 28, 2013.  They discussed the status of the candidates from the FBHS related to their diaconal ordination.  The Committee has decided, due to lack of enough information as regards the present status of such candidates, to first provide the venue by which the Director for Ministerial Formation would have the chance to get to know such candidates and find clarity with regard to the questions pertaining to their present status.

9. Thesis Writers

The theses of Andro Fernandez OFM and Orly Jimeno are still in progress.  Andro on one hand hopes to defend his thesis sometime in September this year since he is almost at the final stage of his writing.  Orly, on the other hand, sets to finish his whole (rough) draft before September of this same year.  Further, our fourth year ICTC student friars: Emerson Bumagat OFM, Angelo Dizon OFM and Jose Fababair are also advancing in their theses.

10. Aspirancy on “Greening the FP”

The different formation houses are now becoming more conscious and responsive to the challenges posed by the present ecological problems.  At OLAS, initiatives are being taken.  A seminar on Ecological Waste Management, through the help of Mother Earth Foundation, was held on June 8, 2013.  On June 26, 2013, an academic conference on Stewardship was also held.  On July 5, 2013, Sr. Bessie Orbigo FMM gave a seminar on “Sapat Spirituality.”  On July 6, together with the representatives of the Mother Earth Foundation, the Aspirancy Program sat down and worked out concrete actions i.e. on how to put up Material Recovery Facility (MRF).
